Wireless Fire Protection for World's Longest Pleasure Pier
EMS wireless fire detection system and signalling technology is protecting the world’s longest pleasure pier. Built in the 1880s, the famous 1.3 mile long pier at Southend-on-Sea has had a chequered history, surviving collisions with ships and four major fires.Following the most recent fire in 2005, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council undertook an extensive refurbishment programme that included the installation of an EMS 5000 FirePoint wireless analogue fire detection system by Chubb Fire. The system protects a number of buildings at the pier head including the restaurant, security office and plant rooms.
Using EMS secure site-wide wireless signalling technology further equipment was installed to provide remote fire status information for staff at an administration office at the shore-end of the pier. Two wireless links provide interfaces to both the 5000 FirePoint system, 1.3 miles away at the pier-end and to an existing hard-wired fire detection system that’s protecting a remote lift station. In total, 2 wireless network control panels and 30 fire devices are installed, together with 2 site signalling transmitters.
This project demonstrates the flexibility of wireless based protection and signalling systems where long distances are involved. EMS Group’s wireless solutions have been installed in many site-wide applications where wired systems would have been prohibitively expensive.
